Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Games, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan issued a joint statement after meeting on March 24. It is decided that the 2020 Tokyo Olympics must be postponed to 2021, but not later than the summer of 2021, and the name of the tournament remains unchanged. This decision was subsequently passed by the International Olympic Committee Executive Committee.
